INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY
After an initial meeting to assess the best way to proceed, we will normally agree to meet on a regular basis over an extended period and for an agreed fee.
I allow you as the client or patient (I use the terms interchangeably) to set the agenda, listening carefully to what you are saying and how you say it. I avoid imposing my own view and will invite you to experience any anxiety this may bring as fruitful to investigate. You do not have to know why you have decided to enter psychotherapy, in fact quite commonly the reason you think you need psychotherapy may turn out not to be why you are there! Also there is no requirement to have something to bring to your appointments to talk about: There is not even a requirement to talk, although it is helpful if you keep me informed what is going on in your mind, the stream of thoughts, feelings and body sensations that come to your awareness.
I understand your symptoms as vital information indicating what is happening in your inner world and as something to be understood and worked through. As we continue to meet, unconscious aspects of your inner world will make themselves felt in our work together in ways we can think about, and work with. Also aspects of the process of our meeting will come to stand for things in your mind: The therapist, the setting, the rhythm of meeting and breaks, the therapy itself, can all be made use of in the work.
I offer the choice between sitting face to face or lying on a couch which can sometimes be helpful.
