I normally suggest starting with an extended telephone
conversation for which I do not charge. If after
this we decide to meet, we will agree on a time where
we can allow a couple of hours for a conversation to
discover a little about why you think you might want
psychotherapy. We follow this up in the following week with
another appointment of about fifty minutes.
The purpose of meeting in this extended way is to assess
the best way to proceed - whether individual, conjoint or
group psychotherapy,or something else altogether, and
whether with me or elsewhere. We may decide you want a
referral to somebody else and think together about the best
person, and then I will talk with them to discover if this
will be possible. Psychotherapy is a big commitment of time
and money and I believe it is worth taking time at the
start to discover the best way to proceed.
This way of beginning that I have outlined above is a guide
to what can happen, however psychotherapy is a process that
is unique to the individual, and does not always follow the
same path. Sometimes we may not be able to meet for two
hours at one sitting and then we can meet over a series of
days. Occasionally it may take a number of weeks of meeting
to work out what might be most appropriate.
For these initial three hours I normally charge $350.00
(inc GST), however I am aware not everyone can afford this,
so please let me know if this is an obstacle and we can
talk further.
